One of our favorite patients at Wahl Family Dentistry is Kristen Manski, who is also a student at Eastern University. Kristen shared her knowledge from chemistry class, where she learned that sodas (both diet and regular) have strong acids in them that can eat away tooth enamel.
Here Kristen posed for some pictures with our hygienist Sue and with Dr. Mike. She was kind enough to bring some sweets for us — thanks Kristen. Don’t tell our other patients about the sweets! Lol.
Dr. Mike was invited again this year to speak to Ms. Dean’s “Lunch Bunch,” a group of 5th grade boys who meet weekly with a professional who talks about his profession. The boys enjoyed hearing about dental health and dentistry, Dr. Mike’s passion. Many of the boys want to be professional football or basketball players. Dr. Mike explained that if they should do well in school as 99% of professional athletes go to college. And a backup plan never hurts either.
Jameson Volko is our patient and an outstanding gymnast on the Olympiad Gymnastics traveling team. At the meet in Fruitland, Maryland on December 8, Jameson won a whole bunch of medals, and a trophy for first place all-around in Level 4. She has also won countless other medals and trophies at other gymnastics meets. Way to go Jameson!
Jameson is also Kira’s classmate and one of her best friends.
Kira competed at her first gymnastics meet in a Fruitland, Maryland as part of the Olympiad Gymnastics team. She had a great time and is looking forward to competing again. Kira enjoyed making this almond-tooth snowman on Sunday, but she was ecstatic when the announcement was made that she’s off school on Monday!
Leah’s favorite animals are giraffes, and she enjoyed making this interesting comic strip “Giraffeland” about them.
Dr. Mike’s brother Joe is a family lawyer by day whose office is in the second floor of the Wahl Building, but at night he often plays blues music at various venues around town. Here he is at the Hartefeld National Country Club in Avondale, Pennsylvania on Friday night November 29.

Katarina Lucardie is an 11-year-old middle school student who is totally bald from alopecia areata. She has been wearing a wig to school for many years, but the wig irritated her scalp so she wanted to stop wearing her wig but didn’t know how to tell her classmates. She made a short documentary with her teachers to play for her classmates, who asked questions of her afterward. Many students cried while watching the documentary. The whole class is very supportive of her and many have told her she looks even better without her wig.
The New York Times featured a new study from the University of Pittsburgh published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which tracked the effects of vaccinations back to 1924, looking at disease trends from the 19th century until the present day. The study showed that more than 100 million cases of serious contagious diseases including polio, measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis A, diphtheria and pertussis, and whooping cough have been prevented and possibly 3 to 4 million deaths.
At Thanksgiving, it is time to reflect on what we have to be thankful about. I am very thankful for the vaccinations my children and I have had.
Leah was off school yesterday and came in to the office to help Krystle and the other assistants with sticking supplies. Leah and Krystle secretly taped some toy bugs to the inside of Stacey’s locker. Stacey was very surprised!
