When he was obese, Lee Jordan, now 50 years old, suffered from diabetes, lung disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and doctors gave him just two years to live. After reuniting with Beth Schwein, the love of his life, Lee determined to turn his life around, undergoing gastric bypass along with a strict diet and exercise regimen, losing 275 pounds and becoming a fitness trainer. His health problems have now reversed, and he and Beth have gotten married. His story is reported in The Daily Mail here.
The New York Times is reporting that to combat caries in children, the American Dental Association (ADA) has changed its recommendation for the use of fluoride-containing toothpaste in children under 2 years of age. In the past, the ADA recommended toothbrushing with no fluoride toothpaste in children under 2 since children are likely to ingest some of the toothpaste. After conducting a systemic review of 17 studies published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, the ADA now recommends smearing a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on the toothbrush before brushing in very young children.
Albert Temple has been one of our favorite patients for many years. He frequently brings cakes and other treats for “his girls” at Wahl Family Dentistry. Today he brought a delicious and beautiful Valentines Day cake for us. Thanks Mr. Temple! Don’t worry — we all brush our teeth afterward.
The New York Times is reporting on a large study in the British Medical Journalof almost 90,000 women aged 40 to 59 years randomly assigned to two groups, one with annual mammography screening and one with annual physical breast examinations. The mortality from breast cancer was the same in both groups, but there was more overdiagnosis of small cancers that were likely not to spread in the mammography group, leading to overtreatment with surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. There are an estimated 37 million annual mammographies performed in the United States. This study is leading experts to question the value of routine mammography in women.

Our patient Becca Boulogne is an 8-year-old third grader at North Star Elementary School. She has been in many plays, including at the Wilmington Drama League and the Delaware Childrens Theater. She is also a fantastic singer and will be singing three songs at a concert on March 1st, but she’s not sure where.
When she was in the other day, she was nice enough to sing one of my favorite songs, “Castle on a Cloud” from Les Miserables. Way to go Becca! Thanks for serenading us.
