To kick off 2015 National Childrens’ Dental Health Month, Tina, Jess, and Toothy visited the JCC and talked about good dental health and hygiene.

Dr. Mike was interviewed by Real World Endo (a dental continuing education group) about a recently published article on dental surgery in anticoagulated patients.

The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs issued its most comprehensive statement ever on the use of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with joint replacements. After a thorough review of the available evidence the ADA concluded, “In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.” The full statement is published in the January 2015 Journal of the American Dental Association and is available here.

Antibiotics are often very useful medications, but unfortunately, sometimes not, as this article in the New York Times points out.

As I tell patients, almost everything is perfectly good in moderation, milk included. What else would you put on cereal? Cookies without milk would be unthinkable. There’s nothing wrong with a periodic glass because you like it. But there’s very little evidence that most adults need it. There’s also very little evidence that it’s doing them much good.
